Json Formatter
What it does
Formats JSON data with indentation and syntax highlighting. Validates structure and shows errors.
Raw JSON is unreadable — and a single missing comma can break the entire data structure
JSON is the most used data format on the web, but raw JSON without formatting is nearly impossible for humans to read. A 500-line API response without indentation is an impenetrable wall of text where it is impossible to see the structure, find specific values or detect errors. Additionally, JSON is extremely strict with syntax — a missing comma, an extra comma or an unclosed bracket makes the entire file invalid, and error messages from parsers are often cryptic and unhelpful.
- Unformatted JSON is unreadable — without indentation and line breaks it is impossible to see nested structures, find specific keys or understand the data model
- Syntax errors are hard to find — a missing comma on line 347 in a 500-line JSON file can take 30 minutes to find manually, while a formatter finds it in milliseconds
- Error messages are cryptic — "Unexpected token at position 4523" tells you nothing useful when you are staring at an unformatted JSON blob
- Manual formatting is time-consuming and error-prone — adding indentation and line breaks manually in a large JSON file takes time and often introduces new errors
Instant JSON formatting with syntax highlighting, validation and clear error messages — all in the browser
JSON Formatter takes raw, unformatted JSON and makes it readable in milliseconds with proper indentation, syntax highlighting and tree view. The tool validates the structure and shows exactly where any syntax errors are — with line number, error type and suggestion for fix. Everything happens locally in the browser, so sensitive data never leaves your machine.
- Instant formatting: paste raw JSON and get it formatted with proper indentation and line breaks in milliseconds — even for files with thousands of lines
- Syntax highlighting: keys, values, strings, numbers and boolean values get different colors so the structure is immediately visible and readable
- Validation with clear error messages: finds syntax errors and shows exact line number, error type and suggestion for fix — not cryptic parser error messages
- Local processing: all formatting and validation happens in the browser — no data is sent to servers, so you can safely format sensitive API responses and configurations
Features
- Tree view: see the JSON structure as a collapsible tree where you can open and close nested objects and arrays — perfect for navigating large, complex data structures
- Minification: compress formatted JSON back to a single line to save space in code, configurations or API calls
- Search in JSON: search for keys or values in the formatted JSON — quickly find what you are looking for in large data structures
- Copy button: copy formatted or minified JSON with one click — ready to paste into code, configuration files or API testing tools
How it works
- Paste raw JSON into the editor — it can be an API response, a configuration file, a database export or any JSON string
- The tool automatically formats with indentation and syntax highlighting — or shows exactly where syntax errors are with line number and suggestion for fix
- Copy the formatted JSON with one click, or switch to tree view to navigate the structure visually
Use cases
- Developers debugging API responses who need to quickly see the structure of large JSON objects to find specific values or detect unexpected data formats
- DevOps engineers working with JSON configurations (package.json, tsconfig.json, Docker) who need to validate syntax before deploy
- Data analysts exporting data in JSON format who need to inspect the structure, find specific fields or convert between formatted and minified JSON
Why use JSON Formatter?
JSON is everywhere — APIs, configurations, databases, message queues. Every day millions of developers work with JSON data, and a large part of the time goes to reading, understanding and debugging JSON structures. JSON Formatter makes this daily task faster and easier.
Validation is as important as formatting. A single syntax error in a JSON configuration can crash an application, and error messages from standard JSON parsers are notoriously unhelpful. The tool gives you exact line number and understandable error message — so you fix the problem in seconds instead of minutes.
Local processing is critical for security. Many online JSON formatters send your data to servers — which is problematic when you work with API keys, user data or other sensitive configurations. JSON Formatter does everything in the browser, so your data never leaves your machine.
FAQ
- Is my data safe?
- Yes, all formatting and validation happens locally in your browser. No data is sent to servers. You can safely format sensitive API responses, configurations with secrets and other confidential data.
- How large JSON can the tool handle?
- The tool handles JSON files of several megabytes without problems. For extremely large files (10MB+) the tree view may be slower, but formatting and validation still work fast.
- Can the tool fix syntax errors automatically?
- The tool identifies and shows syntax errors with exact position and suggestion for fix, but does not fix them automatically. This is intentional — automatic fixing can change the data structure in unexpected ways.
- Does the tool support JSON5 or JSONC?
- The tool validates standard JSON (RFC 8259). JSON5 and JSONC (JSON with comments) are not directly supported, but the tool clearly shows where non-standard syntax like comments and trailing commas are found.
