Readability Score

What it does

Calculates readability score based on sentence length, word complexity and structure. Provides concrete suggestions to make text more accessible.

Your content is too difficult to read — and readers leave before they convert

Most websites write too complex. Long sentences, jargon and poor structure make readers give up and leave the page. Google measures user engagement — and when visitors bounce quickly, Google interprets it as a signal of low quality. The result is both lower rankings and fewer conversions. Content written at a simple reading level engages more broadly than university-level content.

Use cases

Why use Readability Score?

Readability decides whether the text gets finished. Heavy text loses the reader, and a reader who leaves does not share, does not link and does not come back. Readability Score gives you an objective measure and concrete suggestions, using LIX, which was built for Scandinavian languages.

Nordic languages have unique readability challenges — compound words, long sentences and complex grammar. Standard readability tools are built for English and give imprecise results for Norwegian. Readability Score is calibrated for Nordic languages and understands these nuances, so you get measurements you can actually trust.

For content teams, Readability Score is invaluable as quality control. Instead of subjective assessments of whether text is "good enough", you get an objective score and concrete improvement suggestions. This ensures consistent quality across writers and significantly reduces editing time.

FAQ

Why does readability matter?
Because readers finish. Readability is not a confirmed ranking factor, and the largest public analysis of top-20 results found no direct correlation between readability score and position. What it did find was that the highest-ranking pages cluster around a similar level. Measure readability so the text gets read, not as a shortcut to a better position.
Does the readability analysis work for Norwegian?
Yes. We use LIX, which was built for Scandinavian languages, rather than Flesch-Kincaid, which was built for English and misreads Norwegian compound words. We also split sentences with a splitter that handles Norwegian abbreviations, ordinals and the letters æ, ø and å. Without it the sentence count comes out too high, and LIX divides by the sentence count.
What is a good readability score?
For web content, we recommend a score equivalent to 8th-10th grade level. This doesn't mean the content is "dumb" — it means it's accessible, efficient and respects the reader's time. Even expert content should be as simple as possible without losing precision.
Can this be used for existing content?
Absolutely — enter a URL and the tool analyzes the entire page. You get an overview of which sections need improvement, with concrete suggestions for each sentence and paragraph. Perfect for content updates and improving existing pages.
Does this replace a human editor?
No, it's a supplement. The tool provides objective measurements and concrete suggestions, but a human editor understands context, tone and audience in ways AI cannot. Use Readability Score as a first step, and let an editor fine-tune.
